Policy and Practice Impacts

Sameer Saini and Eve Kerr's work on colorectal cancer screening quality measures that take into account a patient’s health status, as well as their age, has been featured on Newswise, the ASCO Post and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System website. This work was also summarized in a publication brief for leadership by the VA Center for Information Dissemination and Education Resources (CIDER).

The Editors of NEJM Journal Watch Psychiatry have chosen Kara Zivin's June 2013 article on high dose citalopram use as one of the 10 top psychiatry stories in 2013.

Awards

Vineet Chopra has been awarded the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Michigan’s Frank J. McDevitt, DO Excellence in Research Award, which recognizes research that contributes to improving health and medical care in Michigan. Vineet received this recognition for his study that was published in The Lancet last May showing that commonly used peripherally inserted central catheters increase risk of blood clots in ICU, cancer and hospitalized patients.

Jack Iwashyna was awarded the Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship Outstanding Educator Award for 2014.

The Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), Council has selected Jeffrey Kullgren to receive the Milton W. Hamolsky - Junior Faculty Award for his abstract entitled “Financial Incentives for Completion of Fecal Occult Blood Tests among Veterans: A 2-Stage Pragmatic Cluster Randomized, Controlled Trial”. This abstract was rated as one of the top three abstracts presented by junior faculty at the Society’s April 2014 meeting.

Honors

Angela Fagerlin has been named one of "25 Champions of Shared Decision Making" by to the Informed Medical Decisions Foundation in recognition of her work testing methods for communicating the risks and benefits of treatment options to patients.

Rodney Hayward has been inducted into the Association of American Physicians (AAP), the goals of which are to pursue medical knowledge and advance basic and clinical science and their application to clinical medicine.

Helen Kales and her Program for Positive Aging (PPA) colleagues have been asked to serve as AgingCare Experts for the website AgingCare.com. They will be sharing information about managing later-life mental and cognitive health disorders to enhance the PPA’s mission as a national resource for older adults and their caregivers. The first post can be found here.

Amy Kilbourne was appointed Director of the VA’s Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) program. Founded in 1998, the mission of QUERI is to improve care for Veterans through the implementation of research into practice.

Ken Langa has been elected to the 2014 class of new members of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ACSI). ASCI is comprised of more than 3,000 physician-scientists from all medical specialties who are elected to the society for their outstanding records of scholarly achievement in biomedical research before the age of 50.

John McCarthy was appointed Director of the Serious Mental Illness Treatment Resource and Evaluation Center (SMITREC), in the Office of Mental Health Operations, VA Central Office. OMHO’s mission is to support Veterans through program evaluation and quality improvement.

Brahmajee Nallamothu has been named to lead the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI) Data & Methods Hub.

Caroline Richardson has accepted a position as Associate Editor for the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (AJPM).

In the News

The work of Vineet Chopra on the dangers of “alarm fatigue” in hospitals, was featured on the Science World Report site. The study calls for a redesign of the hospital alarm system that takes into account the gravity of the situation and can lead to less noise.

Sarah Hawley's study concluding that most women who have a double mastectomy have a very low risk of developing cancer in the healthy breast was featured on the UM Comprehensive Cancer Center website.

Jack Iwashyna explained the rise in septicemia and the findings of the Center for Healthcare Research and Transformation (CHRT) Issue Brief to the Grand Rapids Press. This work was also featured in the Detroit Free Press

Recent work by Helen Kales and Maria Silveira was featured in the Discoveries and Publications section of the Internal Medicine Newsletter.

Jeremy Sussman was quoted in the March 2014 AARP Bulletin discussing the lack of evidence to support the utility of routine yearly physical examinations.
