Research Products 2007
Center investigators published 145 journal articles fiscal year 2007. These include articles by core investigators, as well as by affiliate investigators (articles by the latter are related to Center projects only). In addition, our staff made 89 conference presentations (either regional, national, or international).

A number of published articles by Center staff received significant publicity in the press this past year, including the following:
- Lack of clear evidence for ultra-low cholesterol targets (Hayward, Vijan, Hofer; also profiled in VA Research Currents, October 2006)
- Racial and ethnic disparities in controlling blood sugar (Heisler, Hayward, Langa)
- The benefit (or lack thereof) from cholesterol-lowering drugs (Chan, Vijan, Nallamothu, Hayward)
- Unnecessary use of costly implantable cardioverter defibrillators (Chan, Nallamothu)
- Better performance by VA medical centers in implementing recommendations for preventing hospital infections (Krein, Saint; also profiled in VA Research Currents, June 2007)
- Positive effect of depression treatment on mortality (Post)
In addition, a special issue of Medical Decision Making (September/October 2007) on shared decision making, decision aids and risk communication included two papers on the development and validation of a numeracy measure by COE investigators (Fagerlin, Zikmund-Fisher, Ubel, Smith). |
